What Is a Sinus Lift?

Sinus lift is a surgical procedure used to provide additional bone in the mouth in the space between the upper jaw and the sinuses. As the name suggests, the membrane of the sinus is moved upwards (or lifted) to make room for the additional bone.

Why Is Sinus Lift Needed?

The procedure is required if there's not enough natural bone to place dental implants in the section of the upper jaw. Additionally, if the patient’s sinuses are too close to the jaw to be able to successfully place dental implants, a sinus lift procedure might be required as well.

  • Lack of Natural Bone Is Caused By:

  • Natural bone shrinkage due to missing teeth;

  • Periodontal (gum) diseases;

  • An injury or trauma to the jawbone or face;

  • Facial development defects.

  • Do I Need a Sinus Lift?

    If you are interested in getting dental implants in the upper section of your jaw and you lack natural jawbone or your sinuses are too close to the jaw, you might require a sinus lift procedure. After visiting our dental experts it will be determined if this procedure is required.

  • Is Sinus Lift Common?

    Yes – a sinus lift procedure is quite common for dental implant patients. We are doing these procedures every week at our clinics.

What Is the Sinus Lift Procedure?

Our surgeons will cut the gum tissue to expose the bone underneath. A small circle will be cut into the bone to create a “path” to the sinus.

The membrane is then lifted into the created sinus cavity and the hole that had been opened is filled with bone grafting material. Afterwards, the operated gum is sutured closed and is left to heal for several months.

After the procedure, you may experience some swelling, discomfort and in rare cases – bleeding, however, this is normal. You will also need to take care not to blow your nose frequently or sneeze too often if possible as this can affect the recovery.
